Environment in the News

A training workshop for journalists from the countries of South-Eastern Europe, to take place on

June 22 - 24, 2003
in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia

Environment in the News is an event which aims to provide the participating journalists with skills and techniques that could be used in their work. The training workshop will aim to be of practical use to the journalists who attend. In the course of training participants will be offered the opportunity to do journalistic research on a hot environmental topic in Macedonia, and will be expected to produce a draft story, to be discussed within the group and compared to other journalists' stories. The training will be lead by Paul Brown, environmental correspondent for The Guardian, and Pavel Antonov, editor of The Bulletin of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC).

The language of the Environment in the News training workshop will be English. Participants will be expected to be able to communicate actively and do basic work in English. Translation from and into English will not be provided.

Radio, television and press journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo who cover environmental issues as part of their media work are invited to participate in this training workshop. Interested journalists are kindly asked to download and prepare an application consisting of a filled in application form (download) and a professional resume illustrating their work achievements. The training will take place in the period June 22 - 24, 2003 in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. Participants on the training are expected to arrive in Ohrid on June 20 Friday, afternoon, and depart from Ohrid on June 25, Wednesday. Successful applicants will be assisted to co-ordinate these dates with their news desks and obtain absence permission.

News organisations are encouraged to cover partially or fully the per diem, travel and accommodation costs of their nominated participants. In case this is not possible the REC has the ability to cover partially or fully participants' costs. Food and local travel will be arranged and fully covered by the REC as well.

Filled application forms need to be received not later than 10 am on Wednesday, May 21, 2003.

Successful applicants will be notified by June 6, 2003. The REC will provide accepted participants with all necessary assistance for arranging the travel and visa to Macedonia.
