Noticing the real and unfortunately bad condition in the media and their attitude toward the environment, a group of journalists in June 1999, create an organization, which will help to the journalists in promotion of the environmental information in Macedonia as well as in other countries. The name of the organization is been through some small changes, but today and in future as well, we will continue as the Environmental Press Center (EPC).

Aims

Environmental Press Center is an association of environmental journalists that take care of the protection of the environment and the health of the people as its highest humanitarian aim. Our activities are focused to the informing of the public for the conditions of the environment, spreading of the information and raising of the environmental awareness and culture, by using different kinds of education of the population.

Activities

Taking into consideration that the environmental awareness is the basic problem in this region and wanted to help in its outstrip, the members of the EPC created affirmative eco-spots, related to some of the most important eco dates (the earth day, the spring day etc.). They were emitted on almost every television in the country and their purpose was to show to the individuals their role in changing and improving the environment. The activities continued with organizing a campaign for the protection of the ozone layer in cooperation with the Ministry of environment and physical planning and creating a multimedia CD for the ozone. Another one was made for better affirmation of the problem with the lake of Dojran.

Very similar purpose has the Black and White eco list, organized by EPC as a reminder for the citizens and the institutions about their contribution for environmnet. The citizens are the one with the main role here and they are the biggest critics. The Environmental Press Center was a member in the organizing committee of the first international festival "Eco kachunka" where our members reestablish an award for the two elements on one field: the environment and the journalism.

The media has always been the basic link among the citizens, the NGO's, the state institutions and all the other segments in the society related to the environment. For that purpose EPC realized few projects, as the Journalist Eco caravan with the affirmative visits of the eco regions in Macedonia. Than it followed the education by NGO for better approach to the media. Some of these activities were realized in cooperation with the International Federation of Environmental Journalists (IFEJ), and this is one of the facts that shows the cooperation of the Environmental Press Center not only in the region but further.

With all these activities we hope that the quality of the information will be improved and people's awareness will be raised on a higher level.

The members of the EPC noticed that the cooperation with the journalists and NGO's from all the other countries is very important especially when we are speaking about the alternative solutions for the common problems that our now a day society is facing. The participation in the already existing network SEEENN, which is functioning in the region and using its services, helped a lot in extending the cooperation with the organizations that, can become our future collaborators in the implementation of the project Regional Environmental Press Center, REReP 2.1.

In REPC project, EPC is in partnership with the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe. The already established eight offices in eight countries in the region with the headquarter in Skopje will help the journalists and all other interested sides for quicker and easier approach to information for the environment in the region.

The Environmental Press Center's activities are continuing in future with new collaborators and with one purpose: To raise the public awareness on higher level and to prevent the future degradation of the environment through the media's voice.
